Honourable Mr. Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, Minister for Forests and Environment of the Government of Nepal, arrived in London this morning to participate in the ‘Ministerial Roundtable on Tackling Water Security across the Climate-Nature-Development Nexus’ organized by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
Hon. Minister joined the Water and Climate Reception hosted by His Majesty the King Charles III at Buckingham Palace in the evening today.
Earlier in the afternoon, Hon. Minister delivered his remarks with Nepal’s approaches in water security at the Ministerial Roundtable. The event was attended by the Ministers from several countries impacted by climate change and water insecurity, experts of water security, climate change and nature, and representatives from several international organizations such as the World Bank, UNEP, UNICEF, IFAD, and the Global Commission on the Economics of Water.
In his address, the Minister highlighted the initiatives taken up by the Government of Nepal in the face of life-threatening challenges posed by climate change in Nepal’s ecosystems and livelihoods, with varying severity to people living in diverse topographies.
On the occasion, Hon. Minister shared about the ‘Sagarmatha Sambaad’ (Everest Dialogue), a global dialogue undertaken by the Government of Nepal to have a multistakeholder interaction with different perspectives the first episode of which will be held on 16 - 18 May 2025 in Kathmandu under the theme of ‘climate change, mountains and the future of humanity’. The Minister also underscored Nepal’s strong initiatives to echo voices and harness support toward addressing the issues of climate change in the Himalayan region.
At the end of the Roundtable, the Minister handed over an official invitation from Hon. Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Nepal, to Hon. Ms. Baroness Chapman, Minister of State for International Development, Latin America and Caribbean of the FCDO to participate in the Dialogue. Hon. Minister also extended his invitation to Miss Ruth Davis, UK Special Representative for Nature, for the same.
H. E. Mr. Chandra Kumar Ghimire, Ambassador of Nepal to the United Kingdom, accompanied the Hon. Minister in both the events today.
The Minister will join an event, in presence of the representatives of the Nepali diaspora, organized by the Embassy tomorrow evening.
Hon. Minister Shahi Thakuri is scheduled to depart for Kathmandu on Saturday, 15 March 2025.
